Workshop Programme
If you require a basic course to get you started/ or a refresher course in a technique you already know then a One to One session is good value and can be arranged on a date and time to suit you.
These sessions are a good way of learning a new technique or brushing up on a technique you have already done. They are individually tailored to your needs and at a time convenient to you rather than waiting for a workshop programme event.
The session is 3 hrs long and involves intensive tuition for the first hour and then 2 hours studio time to try the technique. The cost is £35 for the session plus any many materials you may use.

Blueprinting or Cyanotypes are one of the earliest photographic processes invented. It produces a wonderful blue and white image. Participants can use either photographic materials i.e. old negatives, or photos printed onto acetate in both negative and positive (on Photoshop or with a photocopier) or flat objects, such as lace, paper cut outs, or using pieces of Jewellery. You can also use direct drawing onto a transparent material called Trugrain, which will be provided. Participants should bring with them images printed onto acetate.
Dry Point from Paper Plates: 31 Jan & 1 Feb 2012 10.00 – 4.00

Tutor: David Barron Level: All 6 Places

In this two day workshop you will explore some of the exciting ways of using paper plates for the dry point process, working with artist printmaker David Barron. These plastic coated card plates offer a very versatile medium that allows for all sorts of development not possible with metal plates. Being easily cut, paper plates are excellent for line and also enable flat areas of tone to be printed. You will explore different mark making and drawing techniques to develop a series of prints. Initially these will involve line and tone in black and white, followed by the introduction of colour. You will need to bring sketch book images or drawings to work from. All materials will be provided.
Scanotypes: Saturday 3 March & Sunday 4 March 2012 10.30am – 3.30pm

Tutor: Carly Llewellyn Level: All 6 Places

A scanotype is a photographic print made by combining scanograph negatives and cyanotype photography. Scanography is the process of digitally capturing 3-dimensional objects on an everyday scanner-bed. This simple approach to digital-art generates unique and alluring images of incredible depth and detail. Learn how to create these images and produce a range of blue and white cyanotype prints. Enjoy this two-day workshop making and printing your very own scanotype!
Participants will need to bring a selection of 3-dimensional objects and an assortment of flat and soft items to scan on the workshop days. Please feel free to bring extra papers and other surfaces to print onto. All other materials will be provided. It is advisable to wear old clothes as the cyanotype chemicals will stain.
Reduction Lino-printing: Fridays 2, 9, 16 & 23 March 10.30 – 1.30pm

Cost: Full member £65; Ordinary member £75; Non-member; £85
For further information or to book, please see the tutor’s contact details given at the end of this programme
In these four half-day workshops, you will follow in the footsteps of Pablo Picasso, who developed and favoured this particular technique.
Working from a single lino block, you will be shown the use of a range of lino-cutting tools to gouge into and open up the surface of the lino. Using a simple registration board, prints will be made during every session. In each succeeding session, you will overprint in different colours of your choice, culminating in the final stage to produce a three- or four-multicolour print.
No preliminary drawing will be needed as you will commence cutting directly the first session starts. All materials will be supplied.
Cyanotype refresher: Sunday 25 March 10.30-4.00
Tutor: Kara Seaman Level: Beginner/Refresher 6 places
Cost: Full Members: £23 Ordinary Members: £26 Non-members: £28
For further information or to book, please see the tutor’s contact details given at the end of this programme
This process is great for photographers and textile artists as well as anyone just wanting to learn a new skill. Cyanotype is a photographic process enabling you to produce a blueprint from a photographic negative image or a drawing on acetate or truegrain.
If you wish to work photographically, you will need to bring along some images photocopied onto acetate in a negative form-or if you wish, images can be positive, but they come out negatively during the process-it can be an advantage to have images of both. There will also be the opportunity to draw designs if you wish. One can also use fairly flat semi-transparent objects such as lace, buttons, thread, or perhaps jewellery such as earrings or anything else that makes interesting silhouettes.
Collagraph introduction/refresher: Sunday 27th May 10.30 – 4.00
Tutor: Kara Seaman Level: Beginner/Refresher 6 places
Cost: Full Members: £22 Ordinary Members: £25 Non members: £28
For further information or to book, please see the tutor’s contact details given at the end of this programme
A collagraph print is essentially a print from a collage. A collaged block is created using textured or patterned papers, threads, lace, and other similar soft materials; it is then inked up and passed through the press producing deeply embossed impressions. The plates themselves can also be cut and shaped. Please bring a few images or ideas to work from.
Monoprinting: Friday 30 March 10.30 – 4.00
Tutor: Kara Seaman Level: Beginner 6 places
Cost: Full members: £21 Ordinary members: £25 Non-members: £27
For further information or to book, please see the tutor’s contact details given at the end of this programme
A monoprint is a lovely printmaking technique offering unique results and one off prints. One can either get lovely fuzzy looking lines or quite painterly marks depending on different ways of using the technique. As the name suggests this process offers unique one off prints. Monoprints can also be used as a basis for other printmaking processes such as cyanotypes or screen prints.
Print Making Workshops for Children

This is a great course to encourage children to be creative encouraging them to make a beautiful collage in a box illustrating a poem they have written.
The children will be encouraged to write a short poem (or story or if they wish just to express an idea). Drawing inspiration from work by famous illustrators, Quentin Blake, Lauren Child and others, the children will create a collage in a box from a range of materials available.
Children are encouraged to bring along photographs of their house or family or pets as long as they can be cut up to be included in the artwork. Please print images on to thick-ish photographic paper. The size of the box frame will be 6”x6” so photographs will have to be quite small - but people can be cut in two leaving only their upper half showing in the box!
Participants will go home with their very own artwork ready to hang on the wall in a cute box frame.
Please provide children with a packed lunch. Juice and biscuits will be provided; please let us know of any dietary requirements or allergies.

They include shape and line, form and tone, structure and basic anatomy, measurement and composition, as well as mark-making and individual expression. A variety of drawing media will be used including conte chalks, charcoal, ink and gouache. Each workshop is designed to be instructive, stimulating and enjoyable.
Each workshop will commence at 10.00 a.m. with an introduction to the day's programme. Lunch will be between 1.00 and 2.15 pm, the workshop will conclude at 4.30 pm.
Shape and Line Sat February 11th
The session begins with a series of short poses which will look at gesture, positive and negative shapes, and the quality of line through the exploration of various techniques and media. An introduction to proportion and anatomy will give some idea of main masses and underlying structure.
In the afternoon we will look at ways of expressing volume and solidity including the use of line as tone.
Materials:

Bamboo or reed pen (optional) Fixative or firm-hold hairspray Drawing board/Bull-dog clips Sketchbook
Line, measurement and placing the figure: Saturday 25th February
Once again, the principal idea is to look for underlying structure – this is of help in determining balance and proportion. Certain methods of measurement will be investigated, including cross-referencing and will deal with placing the figure in space
Materials: Paper can be bought from the Print Workshop. As a guide: A1 white cartridge (115gsm) is 40p per sheet.

The session explores the themes of light and shadow and the creation of three-dimensional form through the application of tonal values using pencil, charcoal and ink.
Materials: as above, but also bring brushes for ink washes
Sponge, cloth and large brush – household paint brush will be fine – for tinting or toning paper
Two or three sheets of heavier weight cartridge paper A1 or A2 size Container for water
Kitchen paper
Mood, Mark and Composition: Saturday 14 April
The day will be divided into two sessions: the morning will look at the importance of mark-making in figure drawing, investigating materials and methods – some of which may be less familiar. We will also look at mood and composition.
In the afternoon, there will be one pose, providing an opportunity to produce one or more pieces of work in which expressive drawing or painting can be explored.
Materials: Please see above list.
It is hoped to run workshops on the following themes, dates for which will be announced shortly:
Rhythm and Movement: The session will start with a series of poses that explore balance and rhythm within the body. This will be followed by a sequence of drawings that seek to capture both movement and expression in the human figure.
Drawing the Portrait – An introduction to drawing the head looking at mass, structure and proportion and how this knowledge is helpful in capturing aspects of individual character and expression.
