Swansea Print WORKSHOP PROGRAMME Autumn 2009
Come
and learn to print - courses for all ages and ability
You
don’t have to be able to draw!
We
can design a course for you or your group if you do not see what you
want in our current programme. Take home high quality handmade prints on
a subject of your choice. All processes will allow you to print as many
as you want.
WORKSHOP PROGRAMME
Collagraph Evening Class:
Fridays 6th and 13th November 6.00 - 9.30 pm
Beginner level - no previous experience necessary
Collagraph enables artists to produce a richly textured print from a
flat collage they have created by using a wide range of flat textured
materials. Pastes, acrylic medium and glue guns can also be used and
drawn into for additional effects. The plate can then be inked up and
printed many times.
The first day will concentrate on making the plates. The second day will
concentrate on inking the plates and printing a small edition of prints.
The cost of this 2 session workshop is £35 full member; £40 ordinary
member; £45 non-member. 6 places available
Weekend Cyanotype Workshop: “gestures and silhouettes”
Saturdays 7th and 14th November 10.30 am - 3.30 pm
Two day workshop aimed at young people age 13 upwards
Using a light sensitive emulsion, this process produces blue and white
prints allowing for a blue background with white images. Using card,
participants will draw and cut out shapes suggesting silhouettes of
people and gestures. Participants will be using scalpels and scissors to
cut card. These images are reminiscent of ‘shadow portraits’ that were
popular in the Victorian era.
The process allows for experimentation with brush strokes, paper cutting
techniques and possible use of text.
The cost of this workshop is £ 43.00: 6 places available
Monotype
Sunday 15th November 10.30 -3.30 pm
One day course aimed at beginner level
This course will cover the many ways of producing an image by inking up
and printing a wide range of materials and ‘found’ objects such as lace,
leaves and feathers. You can bring your own collection of objects but
please note that only soft, flat materials can be used to give
impressions - no metal objects.
The workshop will also cover ways of transferring drawings onto an inked
surface and then onto paper.
This is very much an exploratory and experimental workshop as an
introduction to the wide range of creative approaches offered by
printmaking.
The cost of this one day workshop is £30 full member; £35 ordinary
member; £45 non-member. 6 places available
Photo Screenprinting:
Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th December 10.30-3.30pm
2 day workshop for beginners
This workshop will use a combination of cut paper stencils and
photographic or drawn images to build up a multilayered, multicoloured
print. This is one of the most exciting and versatile of the printmaking
processes.
Bring along a black and white image printed on copy paper or ink jet
paper that is quite high contrast up to A4 in size. Some basic direction
can also be given on Photoshop techniques and how to prepare images for
this process with images on a USB stick.
The cost of this two day workshop is £40 full member; £45 ordinary
member; £55 non-member. 6 places available
Introduction to Photo etch: evening workshops
Wednesdays 18th November and 25th November 6.00 - 9.30 pm
This workshop uses a process which does not need the use of etching
acid.
The image is transferred onto the plate covered with photo emulsion and
developed. The image is thus etched into the emulsion and not the plate.
The emulsion can be cleaned off and the plates can be used again and
again.
This is a hugely versatile medium - photographic images, drawings or
text or a mixture of all can be incorporated in one single print. The
plate is then inked up as an etching plate and a variety of printing
techniques will be covered including chine colle and a la poupee.
Participants should bring with them a high contrast black and white A5
size image printed on acetate (transparent film) preferably or thin
printer paper to use in the process. The workshop will include a
demonstration of the basic Photoshop techniques used to process images
on the computer allowing people to create an image at home in the
future.
The cost of this two session workshop is £45 full member; £50 ordinary
member; £60 non-member. 6 places available
Cyanotype: Two-Day Weekend workshop
Saturday and Sunday January 16th and 17th 10.30 - 3.30 pm
Using a light sensitive emulsion, this process produces blue and white
prints allowing for a blue background with white images.
Source material includes photographs printed onto acetate, paper cut
outs and also flat objects such as feathers, lace etc can be used to
give imagery. Participants will need to bring with them small
photographic images (6x4”) converted to ‘negative’ and printed onto
acetate (most photocopy places will do this for you) or drawings/
paintings on transparent material. The drawing should be done with a
very opaque material like acrylic/ chinagraph pencils or oil based
crayons.
This is a very versatile and sensitive medium allowing for a wide range
of source material to be brought together in one print.
The cost of this two day workshop is £45 full member; £50 ordinary
member; £60 non-member. 6 places available
