PRINTMAKERS FORUM

A programme of informal monthly meetings available to full members offering a chance for artists to meet and network, exchange ideas and information, and to discuss their work and have it critiqued. The Printmakers' Forum is open to all members of Swansea Print Workshop, providing the opportunity for printmakers to meet over a glass of wine or cup of tea and discuss anything related to print. It provides a platform for communication and networking between artists, leading to exhibition opportunities and collaborations as well as some lively discussions and debates.

The evenings have a flexible format to allow the sessions to go in whichever direction seems appropriate and printmakers often bring their latest work for feedback or bring along prints by other artists that are of interest. These evenings have proved to be very useful for sharing technical information, problem solving and learning about alternative approaches to familiar processes.

Other activities are also held as part of the Printmakers Forum programme: on Sunday January 6th 2008 we held a very successful group print day for any of our full members who wanted to take part.

Future plans include visits to exhibitions and other places of relevant interest. We hope it might be possible to make a visit to the old stile press. We welcome ideas from members for future meetings - please contact us to let us know.

The Printmakers' forum meets in the drawing studio at Swansea Print Workshop between 6.30 pm and 8.00 pm on the last Monday of the month. If you would like to attend, please contact Swansea Print Workshop.

Printmakers Forum April - led by Elissa Evans

A downloadable pdf (343Kb) from April Printmakers Forum is available

Ideas for discussion and or share images:

  • Colour vs. B&W prints-lets have a heated debate- bring examples to back up your argument!
  • Unusual shaped prints- who can find the most unique? Do you make 'abnormal' prints ?
  • Your favourite part of Swansea- bring photos, sketches or prints- your own and others?

The above may help to inform our Changing Swansea project or simply make for a good evening (or evenings as we could tackle each one at a separate future forum?).

Printmakers Forum News February 2008

It was suggested at last Monday’s Forum, that we plan activities for the forthcoming year; providing structure and a variety of activities for the group.

It was also agreed that members should take it in turns to organise the monthly activities, sharing the responsibility and commitment.

Suggestions about the sort of activity that could be organised included:

  • Inviting artists to talk: If you know of an artist you would like to hear talk about their work, particularly if they are printmakers and can bring prints along to look at, either contact them direct and ask if they are interested, or discuss it with office and we can approach them from the Workshop.
  • Talking about own work: If you are willing to talk about your own work and bring along some prints [or drawings /and drawings] please indicate an evening when you would be able to do this.
  • Talking about a particular printmaker or group of printmakers– if you would like to put a series of slides together for discussion
  • Prints that you own: You may own a print(s) you would like to talk about or put up for discussion.
  • Collaborative work: anything that will provide a focus for collaborative work. It may be working on a particular theme/ different aspects of a print.
  • Visits to galleries: Any particularly good print exhibitions should be posted with a view to a group visit.
  • Masterclasses: usually include an aspect of discussion of work. If you have any ideas for masterclasses please make them known and we can look at the finances of mounting the workshops.

If you have further ideas please feel free to contribute.
