STUDIO ACTIVITIES

Resumé: Final Report from Swansea Print Workshop:

We regard the support from the Foundation as having been a vital catalyst in moving the organisation forward in very significant ways.

  • It has provided core funding for the central activity of the organisation and a period of stability and development

  • It has facilitated increased expertise in our staff and members profile thereby progressing the professional profile of all participants.

  • It has increased our visibility on a national and international level

  • It has facilitated the development of key partnerships vital to the long term future of the studio

  • Through these partnerships we have been able to build a detailed model for the long term future of the studio in the form of an exhaustive feasibility study.

  • The three year funding was also a significant factor in attracting additional funding to provide an administrative structure and  research and development support.

We are confident that we have exploited the full value of the Award for the benefit of artists and their community.

Sameera Khan was in post for the full three years of the award. She achieved a significant increase in our regular users, introduced new techniques and established standards of work practice condusive to the ethos of the organisation. Her hard work and dedication made a significant impact on the professional profile of the studio.

The aim of the project was not just to increase the numbers using the studio, but to provide individuals with opportunities for progression and personal development. This has been carried out through a programme of  regular workshops, one to one tuition, open access opportunities, masterclasses, lectures and printmakers forums. Additionally the studio provides a platform for a great deal of informal exchange of information. The regular presence of a studio manager promoted:

  • good printmaking practices

  • an increased willingness on the part of members to take on new skills

  • more work produced at editioning and exhibition level

  • more confidence in seeking exhibition opportunities

Esmée Fairbairn Foundation is one of the largest independent grant-making foundations in the UK.

"We aim to improve the quality of life throughout the UK. We do this by funding the charitable activities of organisations that have the ideas and ability to achieve change for the better. We take pride in supporting work that might otherwise be considered difficult to fund.
Our primary interests are in the UK's cultural life, education, the natural environment and enabling people who are disadvantaged to participate more fully in society.
The majority of our funding is channeled through the Main Fund, described in full in our Guidance for Applicants. We will also make a small number of grants through time-limited, specialist funding Strands."
