PRINT AUCTIONS

Auctions of Original Prints are an important part of SPW’s activities, they help on numerous levels to promote the work of artists and raise awareness of the public perception of original print as an art form. They assist in helping SPW to raise funds for current and future activities.

The first print auction was held in 2001 to raise £5,000 to complete the refurbishment of the studio.  A wide selection of original prints donated by artists from all over Wales were auctioned in the main atrium of the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea. They can be seen in the gallery.

Osi Rhys Osmond, well known artist, broadcaster and raconteur was our very entertaining auctioneer.  Thanks to him and the excellent prints generously donated, the target figure was easily reached.

STUDIO ACTIVITIES

Print Auction 2004

The second auction was held in 2004 was conducted on the basis of a straightforward commission for the studio although some artists generously donated prints again.  A preview day was held in the studio initially and then the prints were also available to view in the Gallery on the morning of the auction.

This auction was also held in conjunction with the Josef Herman Art Foundation Cymru which has has been set up to promote interest in the life and work of Josef Herman and, in his name, to promote participation in the arts. In 1944, a chance meeting in Breconshire led to Josef Herman being invited to visit Ystradgynlais in South Wales. He immediately felt at home there and his affinity with the working people, the miners and the community of Ystradgynlais inspired his work. Although he moved to London in 1955, pivotal images from Ystradgynlais stayed with Josef for the rest of his life and continued to influence his work.

His work can be seen in collections around the world a well as locally at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in Swansea and the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff.

The Foundation aims to promote an appreciation of the life and work of Josef Herman, to stimulate contemporary arts within communities and to widen opportunities for young people in the arts.

The aspirations of the Foundation are deeply rooted in involving young people in the visual arts in very practical ways with workshops closely linked with Josef Herman’s work. They also provide excellent teaching packs designed by Lynn Bebb and Carolyn Davies. Several of his prints were auctioned to raise money to continue this work.

Images of Prints sold at the auction can be see in the Gallery.
