CHANGING SWANSEA PROJECT The Changing Swansea project was recently launched on 10 September with a social evening inviting people to come and find out about the project as well as to register to take part. The evening was a success with over 30 members signing up. Signing up means that you can join in with specially programmed events and workshops geared towards the production of artwork around the theme Changing Swansea.
The costs for the workshops that we are offering have been subsidised through an Arts Council of Wales grant making them very reasonably priced. Taking part in these workshops will give you 50% savings on our usual workshops giving you plenty of opportunity to learn new techniques or to develop your existing skills! Highlights of the programme so far include two Masterclasses with Kate Bassett sharing her unusual technique for Collagraph and Sarah Hopkins sharing her extensive knowledge of cut paper stencils for Screenprinting. We are also offering some free open access sessions for those involved to work on the project. Full members will receive 5 free sessions and Ordinary members will receive 2 free sessions. In addition we have now scheduled our first Full members Changing Swansea Open Access day on 23 November which we hope will encourage fruitful discussion and sharing of ideas between members.
Please note places are limited and will be booked up on a first come first served basis. If you haven’t signed up yet don’t worry! You can register and become a member at any time throughout the project and join in with the workshops and events that are taking place. Either contact the Workshop or download the Changing Swansea registration form from the website (word document 53Kb). We have suggested a size for the prints to allow us to market collections of prints in specially printed portfolios. Details of the paper size can be downloaded here (pdf file 24Kb) or are available from the workshop, contact us. |

There are the obvious Dylan Thomas quotes but we are interested in any source which will help build up a picture of the town and its history. It could be a piece of original writing, a quote from a newspaper article, or perhaps a poem. We are inviting everyone to send in material for this compilation, Introduction to Research Resources: Kara Seaman Saturday 18 October 10.00 am to 2.00 pm Level: All This is an opportunity to gain some background knowledge of the history and changing landscape of Swansea, as well as looking at some artists who use Swansea in their work. The workshop will mainly focus on highlighting resources available for continuing your research for making work around this theme. You will need to bring your own drawing materials - charcoal and ink, gouache etc you would like to use. We will bring along some A1 and A2 cartridge paper, but you may prefer to work on specialist paper or in sketch books, We will also bring along some boards for those of you without transport. The Museum stores are at the back of the park and ride car park at White Rock in the Hafod, Swansea. It is an excellent process for muilti-coloured work and layering effects. Participants are required to bring positive photographic images in black and white and photocopied onto clear acetate. The cost of this 2 day workshop is £30 full members; £40 ordinary members 6 places available Text in Printmaking: Jackie Ford Monday 3 November or Wednesday 12 November 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm Level: All This theme, Changing Swansea, has already thrown up some interesting possibilities for using text - whether the source is an historic document, a piece from an old newspaper or an original comment or piece of contemporary or original writing. This workshop will look at some of the ways text can be manipulated and applied through a print process. Letterpress: setting up wooden type for printing in the relief press Digital manipulation in Serif PagePlus for applications using photo transfer as in cyanotype, photo etch and photoscreenprint. The cost for 1 session is £10 full members; £12.50 ordinary members 8 Places available Screenprinting Masterclass: Sarah Hopkins Sunday 9 November 10.30 am to 4.30 pm Level: Advanced Sarah Hopkins has spent the last 18 years developing and perfecting the technique of screenprinting with cut and torn paper stencils. This Masterclass will provide a comprehensive introduction to her particular technique of layering vibrant blocks of colour. The sessions are geared for artists with screenprinting experience. SPW will provide all the facilities required for this simple yet highly adaptable and effective printmaking technique. Demonstrations and practical assistance will be given on all aspects of the process including: stencil cutting, printing planes of colour and texture and registration. The cost of this 1 day Masterclass is £35 full members: £45 ordinary members 6 places available Collagraph Masterclass: Kate Bassett Saturday 15 November 10.00 am to 5.00 pm Level: Advanced This is a Masterclass suitable for anyone with collagraph experience who wants to build on those skills and explore Kate’s unique approach to this versatile technique. The aim is to make an intaglio collagraph print by only scoring, pealing and gluing the surface of the block to form an image, using a limited materials collagraph, rather than using a wide range of textured materials. This will show people how to create a collagraph through a focus on drawing. Participants will need to prepare by bringing a drawing(s) to the beginning of the workshop so that work on making the plates will be complete by lunchtime and leave a reasonable amount of time for printing. The cost of this 1 day Masterclass is £30 Full members; £40 Ordinary members 8 places available Introductory Cyanotype Workshop: Kara Seaman Tuesday 18 November and Tuesday 25 November 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm Level: Beginner The Cyanotype process is one of the first photographic processes developed over one hundred and fifty years ago, which produces a blue print onto different surfaces, such as papers and natural fabrics. This workshop provides an introduction to the techniques, using a wide range of images and sources. Participants are required to bring both negative and positive photographic images in black and white and photocopied onto clear acetate, and a range on flat objects, such as lace, feathers, or anything participants think may be suitable. Please contact the workshop if further details are required. The cost of this 2 session workshop is £20 full member; £25 ordinary member 8 places available Reduction Wood Cut / Lino Cut: Alan Williams Tuesday 25th November 10.00 am to 4.00 pm Level: Beginner and Intermediate Participants in this one day workshop will produce a multicolour lino or woodcut using the reduction method. This technique was pioneered by Picasso during the 1950’s and enables a colour print to be made from just one block rather than the traditional method which uses a separate block for the printing of each colour. It will be a busy day so please prepare by bringing along sketches /drawings based around the Changing Swansea theme bearing in mind that you will probably be working in no more than three colours. The cost of this 1 day workshop is £20 full members; £ 25 ordinary members 8 Places available Compilation of Swansea associated writings and texts.
