FESTIVAL OF MUSLIM CULTURES
The Festival of Muslim Cultures was a year-long celebration of arts, humanities, education and discourse that seeks to foster an improved understanding and appreciation for Muslim culture. Major events and exhibitions were organised across the United Kingdom in which moderate Muslim voices can be heard, and negative stereotypes challenged.
Swansea Print Workshop (SPW) set up a special printmaking programme under the banner of the Festival of Muslim Culture UK 2006 inspired by the belief that the arts can play a role in changing society for the better by enabling people to enter into the experiences of others.

Main events of the project included
Artists in Residence
As part of our programme, we formally invited two artists from Pakistan, Atif Khan and Aleem Khan to join us as Artists in Residence for a period of 12 weeks to assist us in our understanding of Islamic Art through printmaking.
As Resident Artists, Atif and Aleem delivered a series of workshops and masterclasses to professional printmakers, our Outreach Team and the wider community on the theme of 'Image, Symbol and Text'.
Contemporary Pakistani Printmakers Exhibition
As part of our year long programme a touring exhibition was organised: Contemporary Pakistani Printmakers, which began at Oriel Ceri Richards, Swansea from 14 January to 4 February 2006.
Supporting the Contemporary Pakistani Printmakers exhibition is a tri-lingual exhibition catalogue, which is published in English, Welsh and Urdu.
The exhibition and supporting material provided a specially appointed Outreach Team with a resource for teaching, informing local children, students and community groups about contemporary approaches to printmaking under the theme of 'Image and Symbol and Text'.
Master Classes
An extensive workshop programme was designed to celebrate the Festival of Muslim Cultures:UK 2006 and our theme, 'Image and Symbol and Text'. The programme focused around our artists in residence and also the Contemporary Pakistani Printmakers exhibition at Oriel Ceri Richards, Swansea.
These workshops were aimed at more experienced artists. They enabled individuals to further develop their practice by experiencing the expertise of the lead artist.

Outreach Artists
A team of specially trained professional printmakers were appointed to work in colleges, with school children of all ages, and with community groups such as 'asylum seekers', 'Muslim women' and the 'over 50s' in Swansea.

Workshops that have taken place include:
Asylum Seekers living in Blaenymaes, supported by the Common Investment Fund
Muslim Women living in Swansea, supported by the Department of Adult and Continuing Education(DACE), University of Wales, Swansea
Primary Schools
