Background Swansea Print Workshop has an established reputation as a provider of printmaking facilities, training and opportunities to exhibit work in the practice of Printmaking for a wide range of printmakers from beginners to professional artists in a variety of contexts. Our remit is to pass on traditional skills in printmaking whilst keeping abreast of new techniques and new developments. The New Creative Dialogues project will provide the organisation with an opportunity to work with a printmaker with a new perspective. The Artist in Residence will lead the organisation into a new area of practice - this could be through an engagement with new technologies, an innovative approach or method of placing work in the public domain. The Artist will be fully supported by an experienced administrator who will be responsible for orchestrating a supportive context for in administration supervison, finance and budget, marketing and publicity, volunteer supervision and event management. This will enable the Artist to maximize their time spent with the Workshop on delivering activities and developing their portfolio. Residency Remit
The Printmaker will demonstrate a new approach to printmaking. This could be an engagement with a new technology or an innovative approach or a method of placing work in the public domain, physically or electronically. We hope the artist will generate increased awareness of contemporary practice by encouraging discussion and creating activity in the Workshop which will become a catalyst for change and new perspectives across the range of our activities. The artist will support individual development of artists through formal and informal contact with the working membership through classes, training for workshop leaders and working with them to facilitate engagement with young volunteers and the community, in particular the voluntary and education sectors. The Printmaker will be expected to adhere to the policies of Swansea Print Workshop in particular the health and safety requirements and our commitment to using non-toxic, sustainable materials for all printmaking practice. The artist will be responsible for: A series of Masterclasses We anticipate a programme of up to four masterclasses which will be offered to all our members and to the general public. These classes are an opportunity to work intensively with a small group of printmakers on their own work. Additional payments will be made for these. Introductory talk about recent work open to members of the public. This will be an informal presentation of recent work with the opportunity to discuss the developing programme of activity with participants Training Sessions Working with Workshop leaders on training sessions. These will be as much an opportunity for the exchange of ideas in developing an approach for an outreach programme as well as any exchange of technical skills. Personal Practice The artist will be given priority to develop their own work with access to studio 24/7 outside their three day commitment. This may include working on their own work during open access sessions at the workshop. These are not teaching activities and are supported and supervised by an open access leader. Exhibition of work Proposal of exhibition of work produced during the residency: this could be gallery-based or an alternative method of placing the work in the public domain.
