Background
I have been painting and drawing since coming to
Wales in 1974, attending various classes and workshops in the evenings
and holidays. Then in 1994, while still working as a school secretary,
I started on a foundation course in Cardiff which consisted of 2 years
evening classes and 1year part time. I took early retirement in 1996 to
complete the 1year part time and obtained my Foundation in 1997,
culminating in a BA (Hons) Degree in Fine Art specialising in
Printmaking in 2000 at the University of Wales Institute in Cardiff. I
have exhibited in various galleries in Wales, was selected for the Wales
Drawing Biennale Touring Exhibition in 2002/3 and was one of 12 artists
exhibiting a boxed set of limited edition prints previewed in Brussels
and taken to New York. In September 2009 I was awarded 1st
prize in the Open Art Exhibition at the Rhondda Heritage Centre in
Wales.
Artist's Statement
My work is centred on portraying images found on
the beach and in hedgerows with rich textural qualities using collage
and natural plant material which explore opposites such as soft flowing
lines, hard irregular shapes and strong contrasts. I enjoy life drawing
classes and usually try to go out sketching every week, weather
permitting. I am a keen supporter of Jazz in Swansea which often feeds
through into my work.
