CHILD PROTECTION POLICY

Swansea Print Workshop is an organisation that works with all age groups.

The Workshop regards as important its role in working with the young, both school age children and young adults. To ensure that our work is carried out in a way that protects all individuals working, volunteering or participating in activities through the Workshop we ask the following:

  • All members receive guidelines regarding health and safety and adhere to the advice contained within them.

  • That whenever training courses are available and fall within the current working budget, that they shall be obtained for key members of staff who in turn can train others within the organisation.

  • All volunteers and interns involved in organising or delivering Workshop services to the public will be required to provide details of previous experience, particularly any details they have of working with children. Volunteers will be interviewed ‘formally’. Two references will be sought, one of which must be supplied by persons who have experience of the applicant working with children or young people.

  • It will be made clear to all those applying to work within the organisation, in a paid or voluntary capacity that the work may often involve contact with young children.

  • That details of any criminal convictions against children under the rehabilitation of offenders act 1974. Information supplied will be dealt with confidentially.

  • If applicants are unknown to members of the organisation they must provide evidence of identity.

  • Police checks will be undertaken where doubt arises.

  • Police checks will be undertaken where one to one contact is anticipated between an adult volunteer and any person under 18 years of age.

a. when no other adult is going to be present

b. when regular contact over a long period of time is anticipated.

c. When a volunteer or paid worker is going to have contact with

particularly vulnerable groups of persons. Vulnerable groups are those under the age of 18, those with disability, diagnosed mental health problems, the elderly and infirm.

Reporting Concerns Procedure

Any volunteer or paid individual who has concerns about the well being or physical condition of a child they are in contact with whilst working for or through Swansea Print Workshop should seek advice, first of their volunteer coordinator and the coordinator of the organisation or another management committee member. It is essential that where serious concerns arise that two other members of the management committee be informed. Responsibility for insuring safety whilst working lies with the individuals equally. Volunteers or paid employees who do not feel happy with a situation and who do not find that situation resolved should cease to operate within that environment and inform a member of the management committee of the reasons.

Policy Statement on the welfare of children and young people This organisation is committed to ensuring that children are protected from harm. We operate in partnership with the local Area Child Protection Committee.

All staff and members of the organisation are aware of their responsibilities and duties in ensuring that children are safe. We have adopted policies to ensure that children are not placed at risk of harm through their contact with this organisation.

Because the welfare and safety of children is our main concern, we are obliged to pass on any information we have where a child or young person may be at risk of harm through violence, neglect, emotional or sexual abuse.

Although we offer a confidential service, we have a duty to report disclosures of harm or the likelihood of harm.

Information will be passed on to the appropriate agencies, who will decide what, if any, action to take. We will continue to offer services and to support children throughout this process when or if it occurs. This will be a statement of the child protection policy
