Mission Statement

Objects of the Association

  • The fostering, development and encouragement of fine art practices, with particular reference to drawing and printmaking.

  • to provide shared art production facilities

  • to promote greater awareness of print and drawing techniques and to educate public tastes in these arts through teaching programs and exhibitions

  • to provide an environment where practicing artists can operate on a high professional level and extend and refine their expertise.

  • to provide entry level workshops in all related techniques for all sections of the community.

  • to meet regularly to exchange views and expertise with other artists and like minded groups in other areas of the country.

Aims

  • to extend our user base through working closely with local initiatives to reach a wider range of participants.

  • to increase the opening hours to fully realise the best value of a newly refurbished facility

  • to raise awareness of the special accessibility and creative potential of printmaking as an art form and its unique suitability to first time users and non artists.

  • to provide training for workshop leaders and assistants and a platform for a pool of community artists for the exchange of information and the delivery of good professional workshops

  • to promote and extend research into new methods and techniques of printmaking based on environmentally ‘safe’ use of non toxic materials.

Set up in 1998 by the two founding members, Jackie Ford and Alan Williams, it became a not for profit company in the year 2000.

It is operated with a voluntary board of directors supported by full and part time staff, in addition to volunteers in the studio and administrative areas.

Staffing:

We have no staff at present as their employment is usually project specific

Sameera Khan
Studio Manager 2004-7. Sameera Khan finished a three year position as our very successful studio manager in September 2007. This post was supported by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation. During her period in post she was responsible for a big expansion of our activities on all levels, with an increase in membership, international exhibitions and masterclasses and new processes programmed into workshop activities.  She is now a director of Swansea Print Workshop and continues to promote our interests from Copenhagen, Denmark where she is currently living and working.

Sarah Jackman: Programmes, Projects and Administration Coordinator 2005-9

Sarah was responsible for the complete re-organisation of all our admin processes including finances and budget allocation, statistics gathering and processing, policy documents, volunteer supervision and training.

Adele Vye: Adele has contributed to our administration support as well as being a workshop leader on our outreach programme.

Bill Chambers: Project Officer: Information and Resources Coordination Project ACW funded project May 2007- May 2008

Bill is an experienced printmaker who was project leader to coordinate all our technical information and putting it in an accessible form for all our users. He has produced our workshop manuals and a full range of technical notes to support all the processes used in the workshop.

Outreach Artists

One of the aims of SPW has been to provide a pool of artists who are experienced in the delivery of workshops to a variety of recipients including community groups and the education sector, and are able to adapt to the needs of a specific client.  Their involvement and support are essential in the successful delivery of workshops.

Constitution

Changes have been made to the SPW constitution following changes in the guidelines for Companies House. Director Don Leech presented his findings to the Management Committee meeting no. 35 on April 8 2008.

His recommendations were accepted by the Board.

A copy of the new constitution can be downloaded in word document format (68Kb)
