Aleem Khan
Born in Karimabad, Hunza, Aleem studied at the National College of Arts in Lahore and gained a Bachelor of Fine Art. He specialised in painting and in his final year, installation. Since leaving education he has worked as an artist and freelance design consultant, book illustrator and most recently as a concept artist for a 3D video game development company in Islamabad, Pakistan. Aleem has exhibited his work throughout Pakistan and was artist in residence at Swansea Print Workshop where he is developed his skills in non-toxic printmaking techniques to take back to his home country.
Aleem has since returned to support Swansea Print Workshop in the development of international links with communities in Pakistan. He is in receipt of an intensive training programme in all aspects of running a print workshop in order to establish a printmaking studio in the Northern Areas of Pakistan to which Swansea Print Workshop - in partnership with AWEMA - will have an ongoing exchange programme. This has been made possible with the support of AWEMA and through the generous donation of a private sponsor.

The grid and the square are significant in the work as they represent divine order and the structure of the universe, which is being depleted of its resources. Emptiness and the drive towards the universe’s gradual decline are depicted through materials that are found in native Hunza; un-carded sheep wool, bark, clay, jute and the land itself. The natural materials incorporated break up the monotony of the grids, which are architectural, mechanical and uniform in their visual nature. The natural components themselves are also repetitive in structure and composition and create a dialogue through their juxtaposition.
